Sidewalk Recycling Bins
Sustainable Building and Design
As part of the City of Cleveland’s Energy Efficiency Community Block Grant (EECBG) allotment from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, the City set aside $125,000 for a system of recycling bins and dumpsters for downtown Cleveland. This funding will be used to fabricate and install up to 75 recycling bins on city sidewalks to serve pedestrians, along with several new dumpsters to serve businesses and residents. BCbD’s role will be to oversee a design process for the bins that will make them eye-catching and educational. The bins will enhance the pedestrian experience in downtown while making clear that Cleveland is committed to waste reduction and sustainability. Local design Michel Ina developed the above design featuring three bins around a central post. The goal is to hire a local fabricator to make the bins, thereby keeping costs down and adhering to the EECBG’s goal of stimulating local economies.
